On Stalkers in Dean&Deluca

So we were actually staying just opposite this high-end grocer Dean&Deluca and only realized about it on our second night there. Having heard all the good reviews about the coffee and dessert, we didn't waste time paying a visit right away.

The array of dessert were fantastic. And the service provided by the waiter was even better. He practically introduced every single cakes available and said the rainbow cake was popular amongst those food-photographers while their gem would have been... I can't remember. LOL. But I know I had a taste of the cheese cake and chocolate cake, while the Hermes had some cappucino cake shapped in a cup.

Well, having been a nothing-better-to-do traveller on the loose, anything peculiar at all will not get away from my lense. And the fact that there's 2 good looking men sitting across each other in the shop, one in blazer and shorts while the other in shirt and jeans... Hmmm... Sweet!

On the Smelly Beef Noodle

One late evening, +Ant+'s local friend brought us to this place by the Klong, i.e. canal in downtown Bangkok, for the reputable beef noodle. Come to think about it now, I wouldn't have go through all the trouble given a choice. No, it's not because of the beef noodle being smelly (and I had that as a title just for, and it did get your attention no? LOL). Its the trouble of having to elbow my way through the human traffic at the BTS stations and the overhead bridge!

But of course, there is a whole row of shops selling beef noodle, identified by the color of shirts the workers wear. We only tried one where the waiters and waitresses wore pink, and it was not bad really. Considering how unhygienic a place it was actually located, having no diarrhoea the next day confirmed these Thais really do care about their food hygiene.

We had about 3 bowls each. Of noodles of different dishes. Could barely remember what I ate by now. But having visual recallections of what we had did help somewhat. Then again, I can't remember what this was. Fried pork skin? Or wait, wasn't it beef noodle shop? LOL

But yes, the 6 of us had these number of bowls for dinner.

And still hungry...

On Kissing-A-Ten Kissaten

So I was in town, and I asked if the big brother wanted to meet up for a dinner or something. Little did I know he'd think of it as a 'special occasion' and asked quite a number of people. LOL. *happy*

After dinner in this mata-something place, we headed to IOI for beer. Couldn't decide on which beer house to go to; considering there's a lady in the group who wanted coffee and for an atmosphere that wasn't too noisy... And we ended in Kissaten.

There's minimal choice of beer to choose from. Tiger Heineken Guinness and Paulaner. No price for correctly guessing which I chose. No other German beers though, although Hoegaarden is so commonly available nowadays. But I guess Paulaner was not that bad.

Flipped the menu to see a double chocolate cake picture and we had that on our table the next thing I knew. It was rich in chocolate. Very rich. So much so it felt like a thick pudding or something. LOL.

But what was nice was the chilled salted pork dish. Okay, biased view. I'm a carnivore that's why. But honestly, it was really nice.

Spent like 3 hours chatting and gossiping about the least likely stuffs that night, LOL. And we left when all of us were trying hard to keep our lids open. Or maybe just me. Hah.

On the Old Ice Kacang Shop

So while we were in Malacca, we walked along Jalan Bunga Raya hunting for food. After all, we have had enough of that ABC in Jonker88. And this one by the road looked equally as nice. Aside from the fact that our PM visited the stall once before and the photos of his visit were pasted all over the stall, ABC here was... nice.

Okay. I admit I'm not a good food critic. Never was, never have been and never will. LOL.

But it's nice really. HAHA.

On Macarones Virgin

So I used to tell a friend, that whoever brag about macarons should be shot dead; especially those who said the first date should be eating macarons in Harrods instead of some mamak stall. Just joking. But yeah, I still mean half of what I said. *ahem* Not referring to anyone in particular, but I got pretty annoyed that people start to think too highly of this thing that it's a food for the Gods that only the rich and famous can take it; so if you're taking it, you too are a 'high-class' people. *vomit*

And honestly, no, I have no idea what it really is, other than it's a food for the sweet tooth. So I Googled. And according to Wikipedia, it's made of egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring; commonly filled with buttercream or jam filling sandwiched between two cookies.

The other day Sis bought back some.

The first bite...

O.Em.GEE!!! SO SWEET!!!!

There's no way I'm gonna have this thing again. It's evil! It's gonna give you diabetes! It's... fattening! And it's... gonna cause tooth decay!

After 3 pieces of it, I called surrender. No more macarons. Forever.

Not even if it's just RM1 per piece.

But still, hey, that's very expensive for a piece of sugar!

On the Backlane Seafood

Walked along Jalan Bunga Raya one evening and walked straight into this alleyway with lots of tables and stools put up by the drain.

I myself wouldn't have gone venture there myself, seeing how unappealing it was from outside.

But I guess that's what a travel partner are for.

"Wanna try?"
"Can lah"

And there were were, sitting on the small little stools, making our way with steamed lalas and sihams.

But I assure you, the steam clams and sihams and lalas were finger lickin' goooood... :D

The nation's food critic were agreeable too!

On the Dinner in Pullman

So the son who started work for 2 months came home and wanted to treat his family to some good dinner. The initial plan of getting the uncle's family to join sort of didn't materialize as uncle was pretty uneasy, giving all sorts of lame excuse; we speculate his wife didn't allow him to join as she's away on a course. HAH!

So with that, there were only 4 of us. So I had the idea of bringing them to somewhere more expensive, as I wouldn't be paying for 8 pax; and that budget might as well go to something more dear.

That was how we were going around in downtown, cracking my mind on which was nice; until we saw some banner bearing the promotions for Mother's Day. Rang Dad up and asked if he knows which hotel is compatible, considering he had had quite some experience from his previous conferences and what nots.

So we ended up looking at a few notable hotels in Riverside area. Dad favored the food in Merdeka Palace, but much to my disappointment there was no Chinese dining. Mum's not a fan of western meal.

When dinner time came, we headed to the new latest high class hotel in downtown - Pullman Resort & Spa, and asked for a table in Nu Er Hong.

Service was superb - got a shock when the waitress asked Mum to place her hand bag on a special stand instead of her own chair. LOL. Ordered 4 dishes, and did some mental calculations in my mind not to exceed my own budget. I mean, well... 300 bucks would be quite a high limit for just 4 of us right?

So the first dish arrived. Chicken in plum sauce or something, with almonds and something... Almonds-embedded fried chicken fillet was nice, but the sauce tasted weird. Sour plum. Not for Mum and Dad as they could not take sour stuff.

Second dish was their beancurd with some Dayak brinjal. It was nice, but the brinjal was sour-ish too. :(

Third was fish fillet in sweet sour sauce; again, much too spicy for Mum's tummy. So I had been picking out all those which haven't been 'polluted' with the sour sauce.

The fourth dish was brocolli with some Japanese-name mushroom in abalone essence. I asked Dad to lick the sauce. LOL.

But all in all, it was quite worth it. I mean, we did pay for the ambience and service. Tea was always full. And the comfort and all. Although the dishes were not really satisfying, I thought they were alright.

All in all, I paid 114 bucks. :D

On Food Binging

... in

Kuching!

It was quite a rush leave. I didn't visit my grandpa. Mum let me sleep and rest at home.

But she was quite adamant in feeding me and get me gain back those weight that I lost after I started work.

So we headed for the easiest...

Kolo Mee...

But I got full after just one bowl! Such a LOSER! LOL

But my food binge didn't end just there. After dropping her to school, Sis and I headed down to the city for the famous Open Air Market Siu Mai...

Bought 40. Yups... Forty pieces. LMAO!

Ate almost 20 inside the car as we went out and about looking for super expensive dining place before I fly off again.

However, Mum's mission was a total failure in the 3 days I was home. She would've succeed if my leave were longer though.

I gained 2kg.

I lost 11 earlier.

I know right! 11 kg in 2 months. Crazy. But I was quite certain I didn't have cancer. I was starved though.

On Good ol' Sek-Yuen

Funny how I couldn't find the previous post about this restaurant. I vaguely remembered I post about it before. 'twas my third time there after +Ant+ brought me there for the first time. So the other day when the family was in town and we were looking for a place for brunch, and since Brickfields was no more there, Dad could only think of this one in Pudu.

Parked at the back where we came across some really odd sightings. Does it mean the restaurant still use charcoal for the cooking? LOL.

We tried not to digest too much on how the pots and plates were cleaned. After all, we remembered the food tasted really nice.

It is after all, quite an old restaurant. I mean, look at the design of the tiles. Where else could we find such tiles nowadays apart from our bathroom in our old house which was built like, more than 2 decades ago?

We ordered quite a feast. Though most of the time we were just okay okay without fully understood what the waitress was saying, i.e. how the dishes were to be cooked and all. When she was gone, Dad would ask, what did we order? And Sis and I would just say, some chicken and some vegetable, not knowing what cooking style they were. LOL.

But I suppose the climax was that we agreed to the waitress when she asked if we wanted some roast pork. It was simple succulent and juicy and just... delicious. SO much so that, Mum requested that we had a second serving because I finished up the first plate before she could have any. But too bad though, the second serving was full of fats... So yeah....

That was our first meal this year in KL with the brother after he was away for a year in Europe...
