It's nothing unusual, I've had Indian friends in my primary school, who knows Mandarin as well as most of us. But it was indeed something to shout about in a 10 year old Indian child who has cerebral palsy, intellectually aged 7 years old.
She's great to be able to communicate with most of us, though she couldn't stand due to the problems in the leg. But at least she wasn't intellectually challenged, which is a great thing. At least she wouldn't have any problems learning.
So after we had talked to her care taker and well, played with her and all, we thought we saw her attending doctors recorded that she actually speaks Malay, English, Tamil and Mandarin!
My group members were so excited that one of them kept asking me to try to talk to her in Mandarin. But I was hesitant, I felt by doing so, it was as though I was doubting her language abilities. But in the end, we sort of just asked her caretaker to double confirm.
Her caretaker looked at us puzzled, "No, not a single word!"
And I smacked my forehead... Luckily I didn't walk up to her and asked “你会讲华语?很厉害!”

i remember one of my indian primary school mates very well verse in Cantonese. Oh boy he can really speak..started with all the 4 letters words LOL. We were from malay school. He learnt from chinese friends. He sure makes class more 'interesting" :p
it will be more exciting if you can speak Tamil.. hahaha!! :D
i had a friend who spoke fluent tamil but was pretty embarrassed about it. his family was the only chinese family in his indian majority neighborhood. quite a good looking fella. hmm...wonder what ever happened to him...
anon : why the hell will he be embarrased to speak tamil ?
actually many indians can speak mandarin, but not many chinese (ive never seen any) that can speak tamil .
maybe she is practicing writing a resume.. where we normally fake some of the things...lol ;p
I betcha her Mandarin is better than mine!
