On the Wisdom Tooth

I was with a few of my close friends the other night when we suddenly talked about dentistry. The dentistry students studied for 5 years, and so do us. They do houseman/internship and so do us. They can go out and start their clinic and so do us. But the difference is, their clinics earn much more than ours. And, as a general dentist, they're as respected more than just a normal general degree doctor! And, it's really easy money for the dentists as compared to a doctor! So, in order to gain that much respect and easy living, we still gotta work our arse off studying specialists and subspeciality and what nots. At least that's what we see while we're still in undergrad at the moment.

So, while I was at the dental clinic last weekend doing my teeth, the old dentist gave me a suggestion, regarding my wisdom teeth.

"This wisdom tooth cannot grow properly, so I would recommend that you remove it before you get too old. But when you remove the lower wisdom tooth, you need to remove the one from the upper part as well to prevent inflammation." He was explaning to me while I looked at the mirror.

"This wisdom tooth on the other side here is too long, need to be removed as well. Because you'll always chew on your gums. So, this one down here needs to be removed as well to balance it up." He added.

"I'm just giving you an advice now. Because you're still young, you could remove it without much complications. If you wait longer, these teeth will grow larger and give you more complications. By then you'll face a lot of problem even if you want to remove it. It's up to you, but I'm just advising you now. These extra teeth serve no purpose, it's better to remove them." He said again.

Now, scaling costed 60 bucks. You could imagine how much the cost of one wisdom tooth extraction would be. And to have all four removed?!?!?! Who said dentistry don't earn big bucks? Earn even more than medical doctor man!!

So I'm contemplating. Should I? Should I not? Should I? Should I not??

I assume the old dentist is a private practioner? I suspect he might be thinking more of business and making money with the 'advice'. My dentist friends told me, you only remove the wisdom tooth when it gives you problems. If they cause you no harm, let it be.

What is the indication of widsom tooth removal? Maybe you can do a literature review on this and share with us. Hehe ;p

Well, it really depends on your pain tolerance. When your wisdom started to push against your gum, the pain and irritation will bug you now and then. But if you dont mind these pains, it grow like a normal tooth, not really a serious medical condition which requires a MUST intervention.
