On the Riverdance

I'm a fan of dance. I like to watch dance performance. The atmosphere where people move in unison or some specially arranged choreography gives me the excitement and thrill. And all the special movements in addition to powerful music just gives me the euphoria. But most often than not, these dance performance didn't quite last long, leaving you on the verge of shouting "MORE MORE MORE!!!"

Anyways, I came across Riverdance the other night.

It is a theatrical show consisting the Irish step dancing, notable for its rapid leg movements while body and arms are kept largely stationary. It was first performed during the interval of the Eurovision Song Contest onn April 30th, 1994. It received a standing ovation then. Somehow, it was also voted as the most popular interval act in the history of the contest.

This first Riverdance performance featured Irish Dancing Champions Jean Butler and Michael Flatley. Over the years, the theatre was performed in numerous countries over the world. But the show is currently on currently playing its farewell tour, returning to UK, Europe and the Far East before finishing in 2010, fifteen years after it opened at The Point Theatre in Dublin.

Sad innit? I wonder if it'll ever hit it big like that of Cats or Mamma Mia...
