In Europe, to have your monument built would mean you are somebody. And therefore, if people want to commemorate you of your contribution to the society and such, you'd see a bronze you in some squares or in front of the building or stuff; pretty much like how streets are named after some guys here in Malaysia.
So in Krakow, the one big statue that stands towering in the old market square is that of Adam Mickiewicz.
Adam Bernard Mickiewicz was a Polish national poet, essayist, translator, publicist and political writer. A prime representative of the Polish Romantic period, he is one of that country's Three Bards and the greatest poet in all Polish literature. He is also considered one of the greatest Slavic and European poets. He has been described as a "Slavic bard". He was a leading Romantic dramatist and has been compared in Poland and in Europe to Byron and Goethe. (Not that I know any of the other two)
But it seemed that in Poland, students were made to remember the poems or the works by these famous writer/poets/essayist. Poor students. LOL
