On the Walking Zombie

They say, housemanship is hell. And we got a tiny teaspoon of it during our obstetric posting, where we have to go on-calls and stay overnight for deliveries till the following day. Blood taking at 7 before heading to class at 8 and a new day would start again. 36 hours at least. And I don't know if I could handle the stress if all the night calls would be busy. I mean, there are times when you could just take a nap in between, like most of the house officers did; or some of the medical officer just went to sleep till 5a.m.; but then, more often than not, waking up after about half an hour is inevitable, because you gotta monitor the patients.

Once, after a busy night, we headed to the post-delivery ward for blood taking. It was a Sunday then; meaning I was in the labor ward since Saturday. The nurses, who were really nice to us, recognized me in the post-labor ward.

"Whoa! Still can stand?"

"Hah..."

"You look like zombie like that."

"Have to finish the work first lor."

And she just smiled away.

Really wish next time the nurses I worked with would be as friendly... Sigh... Just another few months... So damn scared can!
