The brother came back for holiday few weeks back and were talking about them dining out in Prague. Despite having gone through Czech Language classes, it was too much for them to bear, knowing locals usually talk too fast to be understood. So more often than not, they would just point on the things they want on the menu, and eat quietly. In another words, the only words they talked to the waiters, were the ones that mean "Order", "Drink", "Bills".
"voda! voda!... "směnky! směnky!"
I would've thought it would be easier considering they've got this language classes to prep them for clinical years. But who'd know, the brother said it was not as easy as we thought it was. It was a whole new language altogether, it'd take at least 3 years to get a simple grasps of it.
Once, when they were dumping the waste boxes of the furniture they bought, a Czech patrol car were driving past. And they made no sense what the Czech were talking about. So his friend came forth and said what we'd thought the smartest thing to say.
"Nemluvím Český"
And the police were puzzled, blurting out what these Malaysians kid thought, meant "How could you stay in Prague if you don't know Czech language?"
But luckily they were let go without any trouble. They were at a risk of being caught because being foreigners, they were of high suspicion vandalizing the public properties.
But if I were there, I'd probably add another sentence, "Mluvíte anglicky?"
Then again, it's easy said...
We'll just see if I'm going some day. Then perhaps I can tell you what it's really like. LOL
