On the Doctors-Producing Factory

There was this scenario a few months back when I was in the Ophthalmology posting. A married couple came into the day care, the wife supposedly was undergoing a sty removal under her lower eyelid. So we were watching how the surgery being done and the husband was there looking at our log books.

"Oh you all have these things."

I smiled.

"My son also doing medicine in Cyberjaya now. They every week also have exam. Until my son so pressured. I mean, I'm also doing PhD. It's not supposed to be so difficult. My PhD is not difficult. I'm doing MBA with Open University, not difficult also. And yet I see my son so tension with his exams. I mean, why, why have to torture the medical students like that right?"

I'm not sure about how the others in the room felt, the doctor just continued with his job, but I just ignored him.

Like seriously, WTH ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

Then again, here's a list of medical schools in Malaysia.

  • University of Malaya (UM)
  • University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)University Sains Malaysia (USM)
  • University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
  • University Putra Malaysia (UPM)
  • University Malaysia Sabah (UMS)

  • International Medical University (IMU)
  • Penang Medical College (PMC)
  • Perak Medical College (RPMC-UniKL)
  • Melaka-Manipal Medical College (MMMU)
  • Monash University
  • AIMST, Kedah
  • Newcastle University Medical Malaysia
  • UCSI
  • ACMS, Penang
  • International Islamic University of Malaysia, Pahang
  • MARA
  • Cyberjaya University of Medical Sciences
  • UTAR
  • University Sains Islam Malaysia
  • International Medical School-Management & Science University, based in India
  • MAHSA College

21 bloody doctors-producing factory!!!

Like that's not enough, Malaysians parents apparently send their kids overseas for a medical degree as well.

So, I'm not gonna be surprised in 5 years time, there'd be a condition of medical doctor being jobless. Like seriously, my school produces 150 graduates per year, same goes to most of the other local universities. IMU churned out 2 batches per year. And the last I heard, MAHSA joined in the crowd and started to have medical degree as well! It's only a matter of time that SegI college offer their M.B.B.S or M.D. now that we've got one of our professor working as the dean of their health science faculty.

My only concern, with so many doctors in our pockets, would the quality of our healthcare still be under control?

Apparently, there are doctors who assumed all dementia and delirious patient are psychiatric problem, without finding out what's the underlying disease. Plus, CT scan were not indicated in patients who started to see things to rule out brain tumor! So, instead of improving the healthcare system, we are actually killing our patients!

WTF right?!

So really, don't go to the doctor if you're sick. Go to the Bomoh. Or the witchdoctor. Medical degrees are so easy nowadays. You'd probably die slowly with the later, but the former wouldn't be any better.

"Now everyone can be doctors!"

ps: But really, if you're asking me why I'm not so happy with all these mushrooming private medical colleges, I might not be sent to a hospital of my choice for housemanship!!!! Apparently all the hospitals in the Klang Valley are either filled up or limited!

Huh? So is he doing his Master's or PhD? ...or both? ...or is he still living in the 13th century, where they're regarded as the same?

Seems to me that someone doesn't know his academic degrees too well. Tut-tut...

The scariest part wuz hearing that the passing standards were lowered just to satisfy the quota for a certain race. Now that's a real bummer!

The standard and requirements imposed on medical teaching staff is not the same like those from other discipline.

There is no way we can churn out so many Prof and Assoc Profs for the medical schools in the country.

Their ability is suspectand highly questionable. Especially the new Profs and Assoc Profs.

So you have to be one of the best and make an impression for patients to come look for you when you start your private practice. There will be so many Quacks around by then

Why would you want to slave yourself in Klang Valley. East Malaysia is a better place to learn and practice during housemanship.

I think you should look into the national policy of the country, predictors or statistics and the assessment of the healthcare needs of the country, and anticipation of the country to outweigh better "doctor to patient ratio".
If ur dissatisfaction doesn't correspond to them, you would be judgmental already.

Sociologically speaking, large quantity doesn't mean no quality and vice versa small quantity doesn't mean good quality will be produced.

likewise, doesn't mean a government university graduated doctor will be better than a private university graduated doctor!!!

After all, wherever the doctor from, the most important criteria for him/her is the possession of heart in being a doctor to treat the needy!

Totally agree. Far too many medical schools! Can't imagine how bad the training would be. Sigh.

medical studies is a very lucrative sector. imagine a private uni student has to fork out >RM50,000 a year... so no wonder private medical colleges/uni are mushrooming..its all money-driven.

no vacancy in the klang valley? wow...would that mean the housemen has 1 call per week or 10 housemen to 1 ward? Anyway, east malaysia would gladly accept any extra manpower they could get..haha..

If there are so many graduates each year, then how come the government still lament on the lacking of doctors in the country and asking those serving overseas to come back?

before thinking about the amount of more medical students nowadays....i think u shud think about those older doctors who r retiring, dead, medical students drop outs and not to mention, housemen who quit...oh ya, forgot to mention those who committed suicide and work in the private sectors and outside the country....

still lacking of doctors in sarawak as compare to KL....1:400 in KL and 1:1500 in sarawak....rather than working in the west m'sia, it's our responsibilities to make the ratio equal on both sides, rite???

but its a cruel fact knowing that there's jz too many pampered doctors-to-be who wanted to be as near as possible to their hometown...

look around my dear, open ur eyes, and dun be to narrow-minded....hv u done ur elective posting yet???if not, pliz consider doing it somewhere in miri, sibu...or in sabah....not in klang valley or overseas!!!
