On the Over-rated Injection

What's with all the hoo-hah of AH1N1 recently, Mum went with the flow as well. Ever since the brother went for the influenza vaccine injection as a pre-requisite requirement for his leaving the country, Mum came to know about the vaccine as well. She had been asking me over and over again whether it's of any use.

I didn't know honestly. I mean, there's a lot of influenza strains. What's the purpose of getting injection when you don't even know which one you'd get right? I mean, as far as I was concern, there hasn't been any vaccine for H1N1 yet.

But after bouts of paranoia, I finally let her have it her way. We went around town hunting for the vaccine one morning. But most of the pharmacy and private hospitals ran out of stock. Mum got even more frustrated and, well you get the drift.

"See! I knew we should've get this earlier. Now everyone ran out of stock. How?"

And I just looked away, I shrugged.

We finally headed over to this place where the lay people call Normah Hospital. It's known as one of the most expensive hospitals in the city. Just like how Gleneagles is compared to Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Payment wise. It wasn't surprising that they still have the vaccine for the influenza strain that is more common this year, as in 2009.

And the doctor in charge explained that it's just for the common strain, not the H1N1. And it's only effective for this strain that is common this year, but we never knew what's the common strain of influenza next year. So in a way, we're getting an injection for 2009, but another injections might be needed if we still want to be protected next year. I rolled my eyes.

"Told ya!"

But we had it anyways. A placebo to calm her down if you wanna see it that way. And an expensive one too. Viral infections normally resolve by themselves. There's no antibiotic for it, and it depends heavily on your antibody.

Having said that, Mum was so much less paranoia about the injections now. Sooner or later she'll come up with something else.

And I expect, "Don't go out too much! Stay in the hostel and study!"

even the Tamiflu has not been proven to be effective against H1N1. Everyone just assumes it will do miracles..just because everyone also doing the same

Don't see a need for her to get it as well. But since she's insistent, might as well la.

Does she know they have vaccines every year?

Sounds like a way to earn extra money for those doctors... isit?

bluesoul, true... but it's a tad bit dangerous to take tamiflu when one's not so sure it's H1N1. for all we know, the result came out that it's not and when one finally got H1N1 (touch wood), tamiflu became useless as the virus has gotten immune to it. so much so for over the counter meds.

SK, haha. true. lol

savante, her reasons was that, if we all got it, we won't fall sick to the common flu that most people are getting, and with that, our immunity won't weaken. has some logic i thought. yeah we know it's new every year. my brother got it first because he needs it before leaving the country. that's why my mum came to know abt it and before we know it, everyone in the family took it.

hospital to be exact. it was a private hospital. nothing to do with the doctors there.

Better get your partner to help you cross the road, and please drive at 20kmh, or better still, please lock yourself up in the hostel. ^^

i feel the same way also regarding the vaccine and for all you know h1n1 might be a result from too much vaccination :)
